The property was designed by Pietro Belluschi (1899-1994) who is considered a leader in the development of modern American architecture. Belluschi began his work at the important established Portland architecture firm of A.E. Doyle and quickly became chief designer there. Mr. Doyle died in 1928 and by 1943 Belluschi was able to assume full control of the firm and changed the firm’s name to his own. Belluschi later went on to become the dean of architecture at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in 1951 which he held until 1965. His contributions to the International Style of architecture are significant. He is often remembered most for his church designs. Belluschi designed over 1,000 buildings and include: Pan Am Building (now Met Life), Equitable Building (Portland), Tully Hall at Juilliard School (NYC), One Financial Center (Boston), US Bancorp Tower (Portland), Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall (San Francisco), and Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption (San Francisco).
